The Strategic Role of the Merah Putih 2 Satellite in Strengthening National Defense

22 Desember 2025

As an archipelagic country with vast and strategic geography, Indonesia requires a communication system that is reliable, secure, and capable of reaching all corners of the nation. Recognizing this need, PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) has introduced the Merah Putih 2 Satellite as part of a national defense and security system solution to support Indonesia’s strategic interests.

The Merah Putih 2 Satellite serves as the backbone of national communications by providing reliable connectivity across land, sea, and air throughout Indonesia. With comprehensive coverage supported by five strategically located gateways across the country Sabang, Lampung, Tarakan, Kupang, and Jayapura the satellite ensures the sovereignty and security of defense communication systems.

In the context of national defense, the Merah Putih 2 Satellite plays a crucial role in supporting Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems. Through secure and stable satellite connectivity, it enables synchronization between units in joint operations, strengthens networks across command posts, and facilitates real-time data exchange and communication, including integration with radar systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. These capabilities form a vital foundation for strategic decision-making and rapid response across various defense scenarios.

Telkomsat CEO Lukman Hakim Abd Rauf emphasized that the presence of the Merah Putih 2 Satellite represents a tangible contribution by Telkomsat in supporting the nation’s strategic interests.

“The Merah Putih 2 Satellite is designed as a national strategic infrastructure capable of delivering secure, reliable, and sustainable connectivity. Through this satellite, Telkomsat is committed to strengthening the national defense system, particularly in ensuring communication continuity in border areas, maritime zones, and other strategic locations that require high reliability,” said Lukman.

The Merah Putih 2 Satellite is a national satellite developed by Telkomsat and operates at Indonesia’s 113° East orbital slot. This orbital position is highly optimal for Indonesia as it lies centrally within the country’s geographical span. The satellite is fully operated by Telkomsat experts from the Main Satellite Control Station in Cibinong, the Backup Satellite Control Station in Banjarmasin, and the Transmission Control Station in Bogor—demonstrating national independence in managing strategic infrastructure.

Equipped with C-Band and Ku-Band frequencies, strong transmission power, and high sensitivity, the Merah Putih 2 Satellite delivers efficiency, weather resilience, and optimal technical reliability for critical communication needs.

Through the deployment of the Merah Putih 2 Satellite, Telkomsat reinforces its role as a national satellite infrastructure provider that not only supports commercial services but also contributes significantly to safeguarding sovereignty, security, and national resilience. This initiative reflects Telkomsat’s commitment to delivering strategic connectivity solutions aligned with Indonesia’s defense industry independence and national sovereignty policies.
